The Work

How do you know when a painting is finished?

I don't know the moment I'm done. The painting sort of sits there and I look at it for days and sometimes weeks. If I don't add anything to it or put it back on the easel then I know I'm happy with it. It's done.

What do you expect when you start a painting?

No expectations - its a search, a fun search. Eventually you feel like you're on to something then things slow down a bit. The search is the fun part - it's play time. I build up a history on the canvas because I like a lot of texture - the story is the texture. Eventually the painting tells me what it wants to be. I don't start with expectations...I just start with a search.
